I'd love to post a game, but how?

I "clicked" on the mini chess board icon and I tried to post a pgn game but a dialogue box came back stating improper pgn file.  I could post a FEN position, so I am at least making progress.  I used ChessCat which is a free download from this site to copy a pgn game.  When I pasted it and hit continue, I ended up with the message of improper pgn file.  Any help in using the interface to post a game would be nice.

Thanks

Hi, i supose you are using Windows, there must be no problems.

a pgn is a txt file, when you open it with notepad, can contain something like this

[Site "Chess.com - Online Chess"]
[Date "2007.10.24"]
[White "demuxer"]
[Black "Mordred"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[WhiteElo "1377"]
[BlackElo "1304"]
[TimeControl "1 in 3 days"]
1. e4 e5 2.
........... etc....

Thanks for the reply.  Here's what I tried to paste when I received the improper pgn file message.

[Event "Lunch time chess"]
[Site "Fort Worth Texas"]
[Date "Nov 2007"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Luca Italy"]
[Black "Mike US"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ChessCat "CHESSCAT 1.0"]
[PlyCount "36"]

Nc6 9. Nxc6 bxc6 10. f3 Nxc3 11. Bxc3 e6 12. h4 Bg7 13. f4 O-O 14. h5 g5 15.
Bd2 Bh6 16. Qg4 f5 17. exf6 e5 18. fxg5?? {Lost sight of his queen! ???} 18...
Bxg4 {White resigned after this move and requested a reset to just prior to
fxg5} 0-1

It looks like this is what should go in there, but it gives me the message...

I had the same problem as you when I started on this site. I now have Winboard installed on my computer.  Now if I want to post a game, I just click on get pgn. After it is downloaded to  my desktop I open it with Winboard. On the Winboard file menu I click on "save to clipboard". Then I navigate back to my blog that I want to post and click once in the pgn box and I hit Control+V to paste it in the box. I just now did this with one of my games. It's really easy once you do it a couple of times

it is the "??" move annotation in that PGN that is breaking it. i will have to talk to piotr to see what is going on ;)

Thanks for pointing the problem. The fix for the PGN reader is now live. You can use one of the glyphs: !, ?, !!, ??, !?, ?!.

You might need hard refresh in the editor window if it fails for you (for the first time).

Test number one...

Ok, the pgn took, but now I'm not sure if the moves are accessable by the online community.  In message edit before I posted this, there was no way to step through the game.  I'll go ahead and hit post and see if there is any way to step through.  My fingers are crossed...

Well, I could paste the pgn, but the moves didn't transfer.  There is no way to step through the game by just cutting and pasting the pgn.

Try number 2...

Well, I thought the first instance of posting a game (Game or sequence of moves
) was just for setting something up, not pasting a game that you had saved on your computer.  So, I "clicked" on the chess board icon and then selected "Game or sequence of moves".  Hitting "Continue"  then offers a place to paste your pgn file.  I was able to paste the pgn file just as it was copied from the "ChessCat" program.  I didn't have to modify it.  The ?? annotation even took!
Thanks to everyone for your help.  Now I hope you haven't unleashed a monster.

i hope you enjoy it! ;) looking forward to many well-annotated games :D

I’d like to add one more comment to this thread.  If you need help posting or you’re not sure how to even start, please send me a message or post here for help.  There are a lot of free, easy to use programs on this site that will allow you to create the files for posting.  It really is very easy to do and I’m willing to help.
