I might easily buy a membership if we had a "trash-talk OK" option.  I played hockey when I was younger and some of the most foul discussions on Earth happen on the boards.  I loved it.  So...if you want to trash-talk someone...play me.  You can say the most foul things about my play, my mother, even my daughter and I don't care.  I will, of course, retaliate while our clocks run down and it will be fun.

I can;t imagine why anybody would be so thin-skinned to care.  It means nothing and is just fun.

Too late. A condescending keyboard warrior is being mean, too much to handle.

Be careful here and if a Chinese person posts fu it means good fortune or good luck. Be opened to the following comments to assess properly the meaning.

Typical goon on the internet. Can't even CONCEIVE of the idea of civility. Sorry Hicetnunc these desperate losers are everywhere. People can't handle losing so they throw a hissy fit when they lose and then call you a Pu***y if you can't "take it". There is a "report abuse" button at the bottom of every chess.com page I suggest you use it to keep these punks in line.

Thanks @Darkbluelord - I've been on chess.com for 7 years, and I'm fully aware that there are a lot of jerks here. What I don't understand is that people find it normal that the site owner does nothing about it, and that being insulted on the Internet would be considered normal.

I would think chess is a more civilized activity than hockey. People may go to a fight and hope a hockey might break out.

But chess has always been considered an intellectual activity. It requires thought, intelligence, imagination, and discipline.

It has been used a propaganda tool. The USSR used chess to promote the idea that their system of government was superior to the Western democracies.

Chess has been a symbol in art, literature, TV, and the movies to indicate an intelligence, the beginnings of intelligence, or the superiority of one thing over another. In the movie, 2001, HAL was playing chess against an astronaut. Guess who was winning?  In Star Trek (OS), Spock and Kirk played chess on more than one occasion. Spock never won a game against Kirk, signifying there is more to chess, and life, than just pure logic.

The top chess players wear business suits when they play. What do hockey players wear? Face masks and padding.

Words are powerful things. Trash talking is not just “having fun”. It is with words we sent men to hang or sit in the electric chair. It is with words we declare war. It is with words we use to inflict psychological harm, in addition to the physical harm, to one another. It is also with words which we seek to forgive.

To throw insults at a player demeans the character of chess. It shows the lack of maturity and it is a cheap shot.

Using insults is often used by players those who believe (sometimes with justification) that they can’t otherwise win the game.

Why would one want to hurt someone else? Because they are better than you in something? Would you stop if they asked you to do so?

Well, here is one request. Please stop.

Well for one, Chess is not hockey. As they are entirely different. Trashtalking in hockey makes more sense than on a computer game. You can't fist fight a kid through a computer screen, but you can in hockey. As well there are definitely kids playing on here, like I said before you don't know what your opponent is dealing with in thier life so why do you need to increase their troubles? You don't need to which is the point. If people have legitimate forum posts, why do you need to bad mouth them? You don't need to do that either.

Also- you saying you can't imagine why anybody would be so thin-skinned to care, obviously people do care or else the Staff wouldn't get complaints. That's a prime example of 'insulting comments.'

1) My whole point was to have the option of allowing trash-talking.  Presumably, kids and people going through rough periods would check the "No trash-talking" option.  Pretty mch if you set up your profile to allow such talk and then complained about it you would get no sympathy.

2) You think that asking why people are so thin-skinned as to care about internet banter is making an insulting comment?  How do you function on the internet?  The internet is absolutely loaded with the most perverse stuff imaginable (even if you have a really good imagination) and people are concerned that someone writes "fu"?  I think that is deeply thin-skinned (which doesn't even sound like an insult to me) and really pretty immature.

1) Chess is not any more civilized than hockey and that is just chess snobbery.  Hockey is a beautiful game and rattling your opponent is part of the sport.  I can tell you that I have nevr played hockey drunk, but I have played tons of drunk chess.  So much for being civilized.

2) The pedantry about chess was lovely.  Kirk?  Huh?

3) The pedantry about words was lovely too.  The significance of trash-talkings words in a chess game is quite unlike the significance of the "I have a dream" speech.  Your logic here was gruesome - words sometimes have great import and yet in 99.9998% of the time they mean almost nothing.  "Honey, please make me a sammich".

Well, I don't know what is the expected politeness standard in your part of the world, but in my OTB club, a guy saying **** *** to one of his opponents because he lost a game would simply be shown the door. So I don't consider this kind of rudeness something you would just ignore in the real world.

Now I hear that the Internet standards are somewhat different, but this is a private website, and the owners could decide that the required degree of civility would be closer to those of a real world chess club as you put it.

That's right, in any tournament i play in the players are very civil. I have hear players saying I played like **** but nothing their opponents. The worst responce i got was when i was playing a kid and it was high pressure (we were far ahead of everyone else, and a win would secure a tie for first). I won the game and she left the room crying, but that happens when a high percentage of people are kids.

I don't understand why I am having so much trouble communicating.

1) The chess club/internet chess club thing is silly.  In a chess club, your conversations are overheard by other people.  In many situations in a chess club it is inappropriaye to say "Thank you for the lovely game.  You are a very skilled player and I learned a great deal by the thrashing you gave me" because it disturbs other players.

2) In a private game, you can have all kinds of arrangements with people.  If you want to allow trash-talking in your games, this can easily be part of the fun.  That is much more like what I am suggesting here.

3) I wouldn't care at all if someone flipped me the bird after a chess game and neiher should anyone else.  There are lots of jobs you couldn't do if you get worked up about such things.  You should hear guys in finance talk "You $#^%#^%$#!! You %^&&% me on this trade!  I should #$%#$%# your $%^$^$ sister!....Hey we are still getting together at your house this weekend for some T-ball with the kids right? "

How to Deal with Insults from Mean and Nasty People Online

@Alec289 - Yes. This is Internet. But again, it is a closed community site where everyone is logged in - therefore, everyone can be identified and banned.

Perfect, they aren't worthy of your consideration. An educated man should be able to cuss for 5 minutes straight, without repeating himself,or be able to express strong feelings, without cussing at all.Cool
