Invited My Friend and He is not Able to Play with me.

Hello Kohai.  And anyone else this concerns...

I invited my friend and he made a username...neither of us is showing up on the friend lists and he is not even really appearing on chess.com.  His username is Wolf9.  Please fix or let me know what's wrong.  Thanks.

why didn't he automatically get added to my list?

He sent you a request, it needed to be accepted. Perhaps you sent him one at the same time ?

No, I mean...I emailed him an invitation to the site...so when he joined, why didn't it automatically add him to my list?  Isn't that the normal procedure?

That seems like a reasonable idea. I only invite people I know, and I'd like to be "auto-friended" with them.

Same thing happened to me very recently. The current method is very clumsy. Fill out the invitation form. Ask them if they already registered in private email, when they say yes come and search for them but no profile shows up (Does it require time to update the database search function uses?) . Use the address bar for typing in the url you can reach their profile manually. After their profile shows up make a manual friends request. Wait them to accept it. 

Instead it can be as easy as : Fill out the invitation form, they follow the link from that invitation. They are added as friends after registration. 

If some people don't want to become friends with people they invite, a check box can be added to invitation form asking if auto friend option applies. 

Easier invitation process becomes, more active members this website will gain. So it's beneficial for all parties.

I've added about 12 people and at least a third of them have automatically been added to my list without adding them...at least I think that's what happened...
