iOS iPad unusable for timed matches.

When I play, the game appears frozen while I’m waiting for my opponent, then eventually their move shows up and my clock has counted down significantly. When I watch games, particularly 1 minute games, I see no movement, then a burst of 2-10 moves, then a delay, another burst, and so on. This is on iPad Air 2 on WiFi. iPhone 6 running same software also exhibits the problem. I miss playing speed chess.
