You might try uninstall and reinstall of the app, and make sure he has the latest version. I had a similar problem a few months ago but it was resolved with one of the upgrades.

my friend has an iphone, it doesn't let him tap pieces and move... I looked at it tonight and I couldn't get it working... We have games set up but he can't move. Anyone have any ideas of what he could try?
