i recently i received this banner about my foul language: Your post seems to not fit our Community Guidelines. Repeated violations may result in your account being restricted. Thank you for helping Chess.com stay a fun and friendly place for all!

what i wrote was that i didn't give a sh*t, except i wrote it out. now, there is supposed to be a kids site for cc. my thought is that, if cc is going to allow kids on this site, they might see some so-called *bad* words, like sh#t, d*mn, somonombotch, and others.

you can't have it both ways, erik. there are already many under-18 kids here, and you welcome them with open arms because you see dollars.

fine. but, don't expect us adults to change how we speak to other adults. this auto function is, well, sh*t. or, is it sh#t? or sh&t? sh%t?

see where i'm going here?

make up your mind. is this a site for adults with a separate kid site, or, is it a site where everyone is allowed and speech will be neutered based on what you deem is acceptable.

mariners234

It's a site for kids, with a separate site for kids too dumb to know how to lie about their age, and is also an out for their lawyers.

Ziryab

Took me three tries to mention the historic fact that a famous individual had died before the innovations which another poster was crediting them with. That word died was not allowed.

Ziryab

Hmmm

Got it through this time.

jeroen_n75

It is just common decency to not use foul language. It has nothing to do with this being a kids website.

Chess.com is intended for those 13 years+ plus and is a family friendly site.

At home, I curse like a sailor, probably have a worse potty mouth than you but I have enough respect for the game of chess and my fellow chess mates to tone it back here on site in public areas.

You are welcome to use all the profanity you want in private clubs and private messages.

DrSpudnik

So the policy is basically to shunt adult commentary to out-of sight (literally "obscene") groups.

hikarunaku

Ya they have an auto filter. Once I used the word sh*t when I blundered my queen in a game, the bot was like You will be kicked out.

It's not just profanity. As I tried to communicate above, it took me three tries to circumvent the bot while discussing what some dead scientists could not have done. I thought "dead" was the word the bot honed in on, but it seems that it was something else. It wasn't a course reference to excrement.

Hmm, can you email me the statement that was getting blocked? jdcannon@chess.com

I sent it to someone at the time. I don't recall who. I no longer have a record. This occurred a couple of weeks ago.

Edit: found it. Sent it to you via messaging.

I remember seeing a warning when a member name was posted a while back. The filter was hitting on a substring that was on the filter. Not sure if it still does that.

mariners234

It's not just foul language, it stopped me from saying stupid or idiot or some synonym of that.

At least I thought that was the word... maybe there was a naughty substring... but anyway, this does seem pretty new (a few weeks old).

well, jd, it appears we will disagree.

i do not think that "i don't give a sh*t" or, "that is bullsh*t", is showing any disrespect to the game (how is that possible?) or people. it is how adults speak.

jdcannon

Alczervik,

I see your point of view and don't blame. As I mentioned, I use just as much profanity as anyone in my daily life. But it's site policy to not allow it in public forums and we should respect that.

If you built your own website and decided to not allow anyone to say the words banana, apple, orange or any other fruit we should respect that as silly as it may seem.

AlCzervik

ok, then. i'll use the workarounds. maybe roman moroney's versions are better after all.

AlCzervik

aside from the warning about so-called bad language, it appears the bot is also restricting words that do not make people cry, as sh*t and as# seem to.
