"I don’t think that setting deletes Local Storage, though I’m not 100% certain."

I have posted a question about this on the Mozilla Support Forum and will get back to you when they respond.

My 2011 era CPU is supposed to be delivered today to replace my 2009 era CPU. I'm pretty confident as soon as I make the CPU swap I'll be able to play bots again. I'll let you guys know.

Mozilla got back to me and the data is not stored at any point as a file on my computer. they keep the data on a database on their server. when a user manually selects either <Cookies and Site Data> or <Cached Web Content>, or both, and then clicks <Clear> this deletes the entry from their database.

when the user has previously selected, as I have, <Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed> both Cookies and site data, and Web Content are all deleted from their database at the end of each browser session.

from their perspective, the term "Local data," has nothing to do with where the data is stored, it refers to data about a single user, as opposed to data about the website itself.

Kaarlo I am curious if like me in addition to not being able to play a bot you are unable to "practice vs. computer" in analysis mode.

To test go into Train -> Analysis. You will be presented with a full chess board. You can modify it with "Set Up Position" or load an old game or just leave it as is and then at the lower right click the ... menu and select "Practice vs Computer". When it is the computer's turn to move if you are having the same issue I'm having the computer will never move, it will just consecutively flash the 3 dots representing its thinking forever.

That is actually the issue I discovered first and the one that I personally miss the most because I very often use Practice vs Computer to replay from a position in one of my online games or to set up a custom position and practice. For example it is great if you want to set up and practice something like getting checkmate when the only 3 pieces on the board are the two kings and your rook.

I would be surprised if you aren't having that issue as well.

My $14.49 delivered AMD FX processor from e-bay arrived about an hour ago.

Before I did anything I verified I was still unable to play bots or practice vs computer with a multitude of browsers under both Linux and Windows.

I then shutdown my system and did the minor surgery of swapping out the AMD Phenom II processor for the AMD FX.

I booted into Linux with the new processor went to chess.com and drum roll please.... ratta tatta tatta ta..

PLAYING BOTS AND PRACTICE VS COMPUTER BOTH WORK PERFECTLY AGAIN!!!

I proceeded to test under multiple browsers under both Windows and Linux (its a dual boot system). Everything is fine using all browsers under either operating system, no cache clearing or monkeying at all with the browsers.

Apparently unknowingly, especially if they are sticking to the story that the binaries haven't changed, chess.com has introduced a dependency on CPU features not found in Phenom II processors and I have to think this is also the case for AMD A6 processors since that is what Kaarlo has and is having the same issue as I was with the Phenom II.

I still hope chess.com resolves this and finds and removes the new CPU dependency they have introduced. If chess.com is now going to require a more recent CPU spec than previously then please make the error message relevant and state something to the effect that your CPU does not meet the minimum required specification instead of "please check your connection and try again". The connection has nothing to do with the problem and I wasted a lot of time pursuing the "connection" angle. (different public ip address, different private ip address, different network adapter, different ISP)

Local Storage is a feature of the browser and is stored locally your machine. The only question I had was whether that data was cleared in the case you mentioned.

Regardless, if I was was seeing that issue, I absolutely would go into that section and clear anything there stored by the site.

"Regardless, if I was was seeing that issue, I absolutely would go into that section and clear anything there stored by the site."

Regardless, I have already done this several times. I already told you this in #16, clearing cache, cookies, site data and local storage or anything elses connected to or associated with my browser makes no difference to functionality on chess.com.

Hi Kaarlo,

This issue is happening with me too. I have heard that to fix it you have to update your browser. I have not tried it yet, but I will soon and I will try to let you know if it works. If you have figured out how to fix the issue without spending money please let me know.

Thank you,

Pillowxz,

the issue is not caused by your browser.

in the second post in this thread user ThoughtPaddler said: "I've tried multiple browsers, multiple operating systems (Linux & Windows), clearing cookies and cache, icognito mode, even rebooted my cable modem and router so I've got a different public ip address. Nothing is fixing it. I even tried with a second google account I have and still same issue. It does work in the app on my phone though."

a user called Martin_Stahl, who may be a mod for the forum, has more than once suggested that clearing your browser cache will fix the issue. this is also not the case. then Martin_Stahl suggested clearing cookies and browser history, and this also does not fix the problem. then Martin_Stahl suggested clearing your browser's local cache, but this again does not fix the issue. he appears to have given up at that point.

any person with moderate problem solving skills will be able to tell by reading this thread that I played the bots every day for two years with no problems. then on the morning of Tuesday 3 February I was not able to play the bots. I had not changed my computer, my processor, my browser, or any of my computer settings. if there was a change to anything, a difference anywhere to cause this issue to appear, it will be found in the coding on the chess.com website. at some point between 0800 GMT on Tuesday 2 February, and 0800 GMT on Wednesday 3 February a code update on this website caused the issue to occur. that is the source of the problem.

I wish you luck persuading anyone at chess.com to look at this and fix it.

take care,

Kaarlo Tuomi

This message thread might be confusing because for Kaarlo and I the original error message we were getting trying to play bots, "issue loading assets for the game", changed for us after a few days to "Oops! we could not load this Bot. Please check your connection and try again."

If anyone is still seeing the "issue loading assets for the game" error it is probably not the exact same issue Kaarlo and I have. Actually had in my case. I worked around the issue by replacing my CPU with a slightly more modern (less old) one.

Can you clarify? Are you on a school/corporate device?

Avatar of Haroon1738

I am having the same problem on my school Chromebook. When I click play online I cant see the board. I know it's there because I can hover over next to it and adjust the size of the board but the board is just not visible.

Avatar of Haroon1738

I can still however play games against bots and coaches, I can also do the daily puzzles but just not regular ones for some reason. And I can't access daily games.

I'm using my mobile device

It's software/filter applied on your device by you school, that's blocking some code from loading.

Staff here are looking into options to bypass that, but it probably won't be a quick fix.

Avatar of pillowwxz

Kaarlo,

Thank you for responding. I have also tried clearing my browser cache and the issue remained. I play chess.com on my school computer, and like you, I could play the bots without a problem before Tue 3, when i could not. ThoughtPaddler stated that he fixed the issue by buying a new CPU processor. Again, I am using a school computer, so I am not allowed to modify it by buying a CPU. Has the issue been fixed for you yet Kaarlo? If so, did you do anything to change it?

Thank you Kaarlo and the other users, an I look forward to speaking to you again,

Pillowz,

no, the problem has not been fixed for me. all I can do on here now is play puzzles. I currently have a 627-day streak on the daily puzzle and without that I don't see any other reason to visit.

take care, enjoy your chess,

Kaarlo.

The problem is the software/filters on your device. Until the site has a workaround, or you admins for your device fix it, it likely won't work on those devices.
