I have been facing quite huge lag issue even the net speed is 4mbps. is it not adequate??? all free members got this issue? lost many games by lag. i updated flash player too. let me know if got any solution guys plzz...

Martin_Stahl

You don't need to update your Flash player but disable it for the site (only videos on v2 use Flash).

I'm not going to say Flash is your problem but I have seen instances where it can cause lag. Also, look through the following; it is about disconnects but some of the suggestions can help with lag too.

Thanks for the reply but anti virus is running in my pc during the play. will it be a reason for lag?? rest of the factors are good for me. I felt free member is the reason for forcing to become premium?

Martin_Stahl

I don't believe the site forces connection issues for basic members. I'm sure that advertising increases load a little and can contribute to lag but going premium is not going to guarantee less lag.

I have recently read an article regarding this problem. Last month I quit this site due to lag issues. And upon reading the article, I renewed membership yesterday after a short stint at ICC. The problem was that most of the time I experienced lag issues was when I was just about to deliver checkmate, or when I had a won position. This happened so often that it ruined my enjoyment and drastically lowered my rating. But since I read the article I am referring to, I have began to understand part of the problem. Lag issues may be caused by some members cheating by using the "lag switching" technique. Lag switching interferes with the opponent's clock, and thereby they gain time on you thus you lose, or you are timed out. Your clock may continue ticking but their clock will always have time increments; nevertheless at that moment in time, your screen is frozen and you cannot make a move. This problem of cheating using "lag switching" is affecting most of the internet sites including most chess sites. And therefore I decided to return to chess.com as I felt this site has a better interface than ICC, more features and activities to access, and is generally more informative. I only hope this serious game damaging problem can be tackled soon by IT experts.

Very unlikely that is the problem. The client application don't talk to each other directly (as far I as know), they only talk to the server and the server relays the data. I could be wrong but any process for your opponent to lag you would cause a lot of problems for them too and the server as a whole.

It could be your internet provider causing the lag, or maybe you simply need to clean out your internet cache, or you might have two or more programs conflicting with each other - so let's run down some possible culprits:

Starting with the cache: Often times folks forget about that and suddenly sites begin to lag when the cache is clogged. Before you do anything, go to your internet settings and clear that cache.

As for conflicting programs possibly causing the lag: Are you running multiple antivirus programs and/or firewalls? Running more than one of those programs (Say, McAfee and a competitor) at the same time can cause conflicts that will slow down or downright freeze certain things until the two programs "resolve their issues". Make sure you are only running only one antivirus/firewall program on your computer - unless you know what you're doing in terms of configuring them to prevent conflicts. I saw it first hand recently when McAfee went up against a more sophisticated program on a new computer - Chess.com as well as other sites were either laggy or refused to function properly, despite my internet speed test being exactly the same as it was on the old PC. All because two antivirus/firewall programs were fighting for supremacy. Disabled McAfee and problem solved.

If checking those two things haven't helped the lag, can you run a speed test and post it? Specifically, go here: http://www.speedtest.net/ and for location select one in San Francisco. The results can be a clue if the above suggestions didn't help.

Also, you should provide the hardware specifications of your computer and the operating system. After all, you can't make an old man run like an Olympian... Wink

Nomadic Knight: Thank you for your thoroughly informative and well researched response. Indeed I have recently experienced problems of internet speed that has affected my Netflix viewing. I will inform my provider that you have identified my internet connection problem. Thank you.

And thanks to spicesaran and Martin_Stahl for your input.#
