The only ways to gain points are either to win a game , or to draw a higher rated opponent.
Learning online chess
At the end of the day, one's rating is just a number helpful for pairing one off with opponents who are closer to one's recent playing strength.
So if your rating drops that far, you will be matched up with other opponents with low ratings. At some point, you find yourself paired off with people who don't crush you consistently.
It sorts itself out over time, particularly due to the fact that by continuing to play during the rating drop, you should start to notice bad things that happen to you over and over again. You figure out how to make this happen to you less often, and how to do those same things to other opponents.
That's one of the neat things about chess: your weaknesses today become your weapons a month from now.
