Live chess glitch?

I was playing live chess and was in a strong position, however both me and my opponent had one and a half minutes left but my opponent had slightly less.

The connection was lost and when it returned I had 40 seconds left and my opponent had about 1:40. Was this a just a glitch in the game or was my opponnent exploiting something?

PS, Sorry if this is the wrong place or this has been answered before, I'm new.

Connection problems like that is due to lag. Your opponent will see your clock change if you lag too.

But it was his turn, then the connection was lost for about a second and it was my turn and I had about 50 seconds less time (and I thought he had got ten seconds more time, but I can't be sure.

hmm. Seems like a major error. Anyone else would like to help?

When you lose your connection, then the chess.com server is not able to send your computer the update of the game.  It might seem like your opponent is still taking his time on his move, but it turns out that he already submitted his move to the server (server received the information with a good connection to his computer) and is waiting for you to respond.  His clock on your computer will keep running because your computer is not getting an update from the server (connection lost).

I think sometimes the auto reconnect waits a few seconds (or maybe one minute?) to kick in when you have lost your connection.  I can't be sure how long exactly it takes for the auto reconnect to kick in though.  It might seem like your connection was lost for one second, but it might actually have been a few seconds.  When it seems that your opponent is taking his time, it is difficult to tell if you have lost your connection, or he is just taking his time.  :)

Maybe this helps.  :)
