Live Chess Nonsense Moves

Sort:
Berder

When viewing a game being played in Live Chess, just in the past couple weeks, often times the players (typically 2000+ rated) will seem to make nonsense moves, such as leaving a queen en prise for 10 moves at a time.  This is a bug caused by lag displaying moves.  If I close the game tab when this happens and re-open it, two things change:

1. The current move number updates to the correct move number:  it increases by 10-20 moves, typically.

2. The position updates to the correct position:  it no longer has the "nonsense moves."

It seems that the bug occurs because the players play new moves, but the displayed board fails to update with the new moves.

Additional notes:  when this bug occurs the players seem to be moving much slower than you would expect for the fast blitz/lightning time control, so the moves lag further and further behind with every second.  And when I see this bug for a particular game, other people viewing the same game will also comment that the game is messed up.

When I wrote to chess.com following the http://support.chess.com/Tickets/Submit/RenderForm link, they responded with:

ryanjpaszek,

Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately without more information about each users set up and internet connection I can't say for sure what the issue is. If you notice that anyone is complaining of lag, please have them send in a ticket and we'd be happy to see if theres any bigger issues :)

So it would be very helpful if everyone took a moment to describe the issues they've been having. The issues I've been experiencing are exactly as Berder describes it.

i'd guess that this is related to the "ZOMG i made a move but somehow my opponent won on time!" issue - moves are randomly being lost somewhere.

That isn't the issue I'm experiencing. That could be an individual lag. The problem Berder described seems to be something that occurs mostly if not only when watching other games.

I have also been having these problems. It seems like many others are as well. You could be watching a game, and the moves just don't make any sense. Also, sometimes during the game it appears as if they just stop moving completely, but really the game is still going on. When this happens, after the game has finished you can go check the game under one of the user's profiles, and see that what you saw was different than what actually happened. That and the timers are acting weird as well. I'm using Chrome if that matters.

I am having exactly the same problems since a few days. Its not possible to watch other games because the moves are freezing or they doesnt make any sense.

I can play without any problems. It only happens when Im watching games.

We are currently investigating this issue and trying to replicate & fix.

Some questions.

What is your browser and browser version as well as operating system?

When is the last time you did a cache and cookie clear?

Do you have the  'highlight last move' option disabled xhe this happens?

Does this happen in all games?

Do you have the 'watch top game on startup' option enabled or disabled?

Bananenjoe

@Kansha

1) I tried it with Firefox and Opera (new versions)

2) A few hours ago

3) No, it is activated

4) Yes, in all games I am watching. It starts to happen after a few seconds

5) Enabled

Many players seem to have this problem. At least Im reading this in the chat very often latley.

Kramnik_Fan

same problem with me.

ToborAtonmi

1. Google Chrome, Windows 8

2. Cleared cookies within the last week; bug occurred before and persisted after

3. Disabled the highlight last move last night, problem is persisting.

4. Happens in about half of the games I view, none of my own games though.

5. Disabled the top game view function today. Problem is persisting.

Screenshot 1: I noticed the players weren't making moves but the time was running down

Screenshot 2: refresh, shows the game as it was actually played with 48 moves instead of 15

NOTE: same thing is happening to "Qurator"

1. Chrome / Ubuntu

2. Never, but I'll try clearing it and see if the problem persists

3. Highlight last move is enabled

4. No, it only happens in some games

5. Watch top game on startup is disabled.  However, the games I am watching are often the top one.

I have this issue too.

1) Firefox latest version, Windows Vista (yeah, I know it sucks)

2) Few hours ago.

3) It is enabled.

4) It happens at every game, I pratically cannot see ongoing games.

5) Enabled. But i have this problem at every game, not just the top ones.

SammyT_97

yap not a thorough update for the site

jbarak

I have this problem sometimes too.

1. Firefox 22.0, Windows 7

2. I don't know, a while ago

3. Highlight last move enabled

4. Only some games

5. Currently disabled, but the bug has happened both when it's enabled and disabled

Kansha

Thank you so much for all of this information. I am still investigating and will report this to our developers once I have been able to replicate and document the issue.

Berder

I cleared my browser's cache yesterday, but I got the problem again.

Do any of you guys have any plugins or add-ons installed in your browsers? If so, which ones?

Nothing special.

I don't think honestly it is a matter of browser or OS, but only slow connection. I think some moves are just.. lost or delayed.

Maybe there is something to fix in the code for restoring the right move's order or something like that.

Kramnik_Fan

no add ons nothing, why cnt u accept its ur wesite server issues not person's internet connection or add on issue. Please get this bug treated and stop blamig the users for bad connection or add ons issue.

Utis44

Reloading the page corrects this bug (Firefox 23/Win 7).

Opening other tabs in the browser and switching between them and the opened chess game is almost always causing this behaviour.

After some observation, I'd say it's a display bug, when pieces don't properly update after moving, but it doesn't explain freezing of the move list.

thecheesykid

Yes, I'm experiencing the same thing and have been for the past.. 2 weeks I guess? Ever since the new interface. There have been several complaints/questions about it in forum posts, live games, and I don't think it has anything to do with browsers or addons, it's on chess.com's end, not on ours. It tends to happen more when windows are switched, so say I pop away from chess.com for a couple seconds to watch a youtube vid, when I come back the game will be being relayed wrong.
