I just tried it - it's fine.
What you need to do is go to the top right and hit 'create seek'.
The computer will open a window asking for your specifications (just like the regular games). Someone will likely take your challenge.
Or-there may be seeks already that you can accept.
I also use Firefox (on the MEPIS 6.5 Linux system).

when I played on livechess beta, I got disconnected 8 out of 10 times (no matter if I used Windows XP or Linux), losing the game. Is that a normal rate, or do I have a specific problem?

I actually had this problem once with Yahoo chess, but it was a one shot problem.
I guess computers are just...quirky...
(they did say that the Beta Live Chess was experimental)
yes, I know what beta version means 
I just wondered if others get a few more of their games actually played...
Below are the problems that I have with Live-Chess, I am patiently waiting while the Beta version is improved, as I know it will be.
I type into the 'chat' field, and nothing appears to happen. It does not go
onto the dialect screen.
I click (and double click) to 'observe' a game, and nothing appears to
happen.
I click (and double click) to 'challenge' a game, and nothing appears to
happen.
I have tried to create a 'seek', and nothing appears to happen.
FYI, once yesterday when I re-tried all of the above,
I was able to 'observe' one game. But nothing else
I have also noticed that each time I try Live Chess, that the dialect screen
is different, But while I am there, it does not scroll (eg no new chats
appear from anyone)
Hmm doesn't work for me again . It won't even log me in , just keeps reloading a new page , after a while I get tens of Logging In pages :(
Is Live Chess broken currently?
When I log in, I just get a chessboard and am able to play both sides. But no opponents of computer options?
