Alas, your complaint is so common that chess.com wrote 2 rebuttal articles to tell their side of the story.

Best practical advice? Refresh your page if your opponent seems to be taking too long. Good luck!
Hello everyone,
Perhaps the most infuriating thing just happened. I was minutes a head on time and with a mate just a few moves away, my opponent seems to have given up, his time is running out. Then the game freezes, only to give me a message that it was indeed I that ran out of time.
I understand that connection issues can happen, but my connection was fine. Does anyone know about common causes of these kind of issues? I'm running windows 7, playing in google chrome.
I would like to fix any issues before playing again, I can't bare another experience like that!
Kind regards,
Branahauk
