The site will never modify an existing subscription when receiving a gift. The gift amount is credited to your account and if you want to upgrade, you would need to do it and the credit would be applied to the purchase cost. If you do upgrade, you'll want to downgrade at the gift term end or your original balance term will decrease as the new level will use any remaining credit.
I have also received this email and currently have no membership. when I click the link it just takes me to chess.com home page but with nothing changed.
If I go into upgrade it asks for my card details to pay for diamond membership

Sounds like you got disconnected. That said, you should use the support option on that site, not here. However, point refunds aren't generally given unless there's a site wide issue.
@dragonracers123 you might experience this disconnection problem more and more frequently this is due to chess.com not having enough and they are NEVER going to spend money it because they only care about money not the quality of the website. You can try to contact support but for me they only wasted my time. Also martinstahl I tried restarting the internet and i still disconnect so it really is your problem or chess.com’s problem so buy more servers NOW.

You have no basis for saying this.
They have bought hundreds of servers and are experimenting with distributing servers around the world.
