go to MY HOME in the upper right corner of the browser window but just hover, don't click. In the drop down menu that appears, click on Messages (about halfway down).

Alternately, you can actually click on MY HOME, and Messages will be beside your avatar. Click on the link that says (number) new. But you can never go very wrong following batgirl's advice.
