its perfectly fair that one person should not have more than one account , this is normal for all games online....but we have cases where more than one person sharing one computer in the netcafe and this site started to attract many new members plus what if one of your family wants to make a new account and play on the same set ? are there any rules for that? , for example those sharing the same set shouldnt play against each other ....how can we organize that without getting into seamingly cheating possibilities.

i have 2 accounts because i have split chess personalities. i use one of my accountes for slow and thoughtful play and have a higher rating. i play quite reckless and fast on my other account and my rating is low.

 no cheating involved. no point.

because one could use the accounts to play against eachother and boost up the rating.

 Can I have multiple accounts?
No. This is considered cheating. You may only play chess under one account.

Yes, the rules are that each person may only have one account on the site. In case of two family members who must use the same computer then we will allow each person to make their one account and then they may use the accounts from the same computer so long as there is no cheating or game fixing going on.

What?  Dear god!  I just threw up.  I'm going to go kill myself now.  I'd rather not live in a world where that kind of thing is going on.  The horror...  The horror...

 How can you check ?

He is joking, obviously being sarcastic. What about if the person with the multiple id's dont use it to cheat and play against themselves or family/friend  members to improve the rating? is this cheating also?
carpman
Everyone knows what cheating is! Those who will, do. Those who will not, don't. The site has to have set standards in an attempt to control cheating by those who do. I see nothing wrong with two people using the same computer to play this site if they do not cheat in the process.

Cheating in order to get your rating up is just sad. Besides, when you'll play against someone at your rating, you'll lose very badly. I would rather fix up games so that I lose, so that I have a very low rating, yet I whoop beginners. But that can be only so much fun before it becomes boring, and it won't help my game either.

yes it is illegal and could get both [all] of your accounts suspended/banned

for family members (or people who live in a commune) sharing a computer: create multiple gmail or any of the free email accounts [if you can read russian, the popular free russian email account @mail.ru [www.mail.ru] is quite good ; use them to open accounts here. And don't cheat.

Please comment on whether above is legal on this site; I am not sure. Because 'multiple account' is not defined precisely enough in the faqs.

Another way: to keep everything aboveboard so that staff can see it - use your chess.com email to open another account for family/fellow-communard and so on ...

What should someone do if they were schizophrenic and they accidentally opened several accounts? Is it OK as long as the different personalities don't play each other?

So, if my wife (that actually lives with me) wants to create an account and play (Obviously when I'm not playng or logged from the same and only computer we have and share ) wouldn't be a problem? Am I right?
