My Opponent won by abandoning the game!?

Hello, first time posting.  Had a game on this site and my opponent had the upper hand, he had more pieces than me on the board, including there queen.  it was a dire situation, all he had to do was bring his other pieces out the back and he may of been able to checkmate me in a few turns. but he didn't do that, he just kept coming at me with his queen, not taking my pieces nor moving any other pieces he had, he just kept checking me, so I took advantage of that and started moving my king into a place where I could not only protect it but be able to advance with the pieces i had left, I was going to try and hopefully promote a pawn or take out his other pieces with what I had left.  I was confident and ready to see what they'd do next.  he checked me with his queen and won the game.  my king still had spaces it could move to that would move me out of check but I still lost.  It then says that they abandon the game and my score went down.  I checked the bored, he didn't have me in checkmate, he just left the game and won, never got a chance to try and get the upper hand, he just got the upper hand and won because he left.

I'm confused, if I'm missing some rule that states that a player can win the game if they leave during the game, as long as they have more points or the upper hand, they get the victory, then I'll accept that and move on.  just thought I'd leave a post to make sure.
