My Opponent's Rating Dropped 900 points overnight!

My opponent was rated 1800 last night when I made my first move in our game. He made his second move (Which was Qd3) and I thought "what's this?". I looked up and saw that his rating had changed to 934. How can that be?

Is there any way that I can change this rated game to unrated? I'm not afraid of losing and I don't mind playing, but I don't see this doing anything positive for my rating.

No, you can't change a game once you've started.

Good news. His account has closed. You win (eventually).

This often happens as a result of someone timing out a lot.  It is unfortunate in its effect on ratings changes, but I guess there isn't much that can be done.

I have an opponent in one of my tournaments who suddenly lost 300 rating points.  Rating points are not that important obviously, but they are one measure of our improvement so it is frustrating to risk losing a lot of points for a loss and gaining few for a win against a player whose skill levels is similar or better than my own.

Such is life though.

It's not bad though when you start a game against somebody rating 300 points lower than you, then he wins a bunch of timeouts and now he is 300 points higher rather than you.

It's highly unlikely for one person to win a lot of timeouts in quick succession though rather than lose them.

I've had a couple of opponents who suddenly lost ranking points because they sudenly lost a load of games.  Timing out all at once, I thought.  But, no.  When I looked those games had each been individually resigned.  No idea why that would happen.  First time I thought an angry girlfriend had gone into his account to wreak revenge for something (possbibly that her boyfriend gave chess.com more attention than her), but when I saw it a second time I wondered if there was some other cause?

Sometimes people decide to withdraw from a tournament.  If this is done during a round it will automatically resign al their games.  I have an opponent though who seems to have resigned all his tournament games except against me after just a couple of moves!

Nice profile pic. Is that a real animal standing in front of the board?

Kind of

Met a German guy on a train in Mongolia (as you do).  He had a chess board and that little animal which had a name and apparently was playing the moves in some sense. Hot deserts do strange things to the mind...
