i don't know why i was disciplined for not playing. As soon as the screen came up my options were resign or draw. I didn't want to draw or resign because I was playing a low ranked player. What is this

You need to adjust your ratings settings to show what rating range you'll play.

I hate it when someone just aborts because they think the rating isn't high enough.

If they didn't want to play that rating, then they should have set their rating settings on a different setting.

I, for one, am glad to see something good happening about those inconsiderate people who waste other players' time by abusing the system with the "abort"

instead of taking just the few seconds to adjust your rating settings like you're supposed to.

Come on man. Get with it.

This is a deterent from people "thinking" for too long.  Let me explain my own experience of this, (It should answer your question.)  If you hover over my name then you will notice that I am around 1450, I started playing a person that was rated 950.  That was becuase of an online friend that asked me to play this kid rated 950 and help him get better, so being the nice guy that I am Smile I accept the game.  I mean, why not?  A friend asks me to, I'll honor my friends request and help this kid out Laughing

So I start playing this kid in a thirty minute game, he just sits there and makes a move every 4 minutes 50 seconds, (I figured this out after a few times of this.)  The reason for being just under 5 minutes is because low rated players (we were both playing low rated players if you noticed) sometimes just sit there in the long games and wait for the high rated player to get so fed up with sitting there doing nothing and so the higher rated player resigns or offers a draw, which the lower rated person was waiting for so that they could get tons of points without having to actually win people Yell.  HOW ANNOYING IS THAT?!

Anyway the five minute rule, (at least I believe that it is five minutes becuase the person constantly moved right before five minutes) is to keep people from doing that.  I know that you are the "higher rated player" in that match but that dosn't matter the chess.com, even experts can try to cheat if they really want to.  My rule of thumb is never think for over 3 minutes, (with exeptions for positions that demand it) and move within 4 minutes Cool.

That was all related to mostly you not going over the time limit, but just as a bonus, (and since I'm kind of bored anyway) I'll through this part in.

If your opponent is the person thinking for a long time, (whether truly thinking or just trying to cheat their way to the top) then go ahead and start another game on live chess.  I have done that tons of times before, this will prevent the cheater from doing this as prevelently again.  I get to play the second game like normal, and skipping over to the other game when they move on it.

WARNING: DON'T MOVE TOO QUICKLY ON THE SLOW MOVING GAME!  This can lead to you losing the game and loads of points, plus IT GIVES THEM WHAT THEY WANTED!  A WON GAME AGAINST A HIGH RATED PLAYER!  DON'T GIVE THEM THIS LUXUERY!

Let me get this straight...u did not want a draw or wish to  resign, so u sat there and sat there and sat there (feeling snug w/ your new brainstorm) until ?

Immryr

don't think for more than 5 minutes a move? huh? if you don't want to wait around why play a longer time control game? whenever i start a game i am quite prepared to be sat there for the whole duration of what ever time control i'm playing.

if you think your opponent is just trying to annoy you into resigning just alt tab and do something else.

VanillaKnightPOC

We don't like thinkers in these here parts.
