new version of chess.com app not working on iPhone 3GS

I'm owner of iPhone 3GS smart phone which I used to play chess on chess.com using installed app.

Since week or two I cannot play because "Version update required". But I cannot install new version on my "old" iPhone 3GS... Does it mean that I have to buy new iPhone so I can play chess? My old iPhone is working fine and I use it for phone calls, texting and playing chess. Now I can't use it for one of that 3 things... I paid few hundered US $ for it and it's ridiculous that "it's outdated" only few years after... Is there any way to play chess on older versions of iPhones...?

Yes do i have to cancel membership '???

When is this fixed!????

milan_i

I dont' think of canceling membership. I fact, few days ago I just paid $29 for a year for gold membership (because of tactics trainer - 25 tactisc problem per day instead of just 5). And I still can play on computer. But when I'm not at home or at the office, I can't play chess anymore. And It's very annoying...

So I hope that chess.com developers will do something... Please guys at chess.com... help ;)

what app version are you running and what iOS version? I'd be happy to look into this for you.

The 3GS runs iOS 6, which was superceded by iOS 7 in 2013.

If you want to, you can try to jailbreak your iphone and install iOS 8, but things will be running very slowly. Phones evolve extremely quickly these days and the iPhone 3GS is all but obsolete.

oh ok. I personally have iOS 8, and I believe the minimum iOS version that the chess.com app runs on is iOS 7.

i also have an iphone 3GS and live chess won't work on it anymore without updating to the newest app version. is there anyway i can play live chess again without updating? This was a hand me down and i'd rather not have to buy a new iphone.

i would also like to add that my phone works fine on the lichess app which i started using since the chess.com app stopped alloying me to play live chess. i'd prefere to go back to playing live chess on the chess.com app.

ChessKingT, you're right: minimum iOS version for chess.com app is iOS 7. Unfortunately, iPhone 3GS runs with iOS 6...

I fully agree with alhorowitz who wrote:

so question for ChessKingT (chess.com stuff): Why is not posible to play chess with older version of app? What significant change in functionality new version has that requires new iOS version? I mean, playing chess worked on older app. Chess board is chess board... Moving pieces worked on old app, so why older app is not working any more? Let the people with new iPhone's install new version, and let us with old iPhone's use the old version...

I'm also lichess.com member, but I prefer to play on chess.com.

Simply, it's better. That's the reason why I paid for gold memebership at chess.com.

But we, owners of iPhone 3GS, are forced to play chess on lichess.com, because we cannot play it on chess.com anymore...

I travel a lot, also spend much time out of home and out of office, so being able to play on mobile phone is very important for me.

I realized that I can play online chess (maybe tactics - I didn't try), but only when I select live chess on mobile app, there is message that app need to be updated. Which means that old app is still working, but most interested feature (live chess) is not working... Why?

Hi I have iPhone 3GS too. Tryed to install the app it did not let me. It looks weird that chess.com is trying to decide for us wich phone to use.

Dzmitry_Kuzmich

I don't ask for there advantages why they can't just give me the old working app?

...Realistically though, you can't expect a phone that's several years old to run everything. Developers will want to keep up and take advantage of a modern phone's capabilities, and that sometimes means sacrificing backwards compability.

Can anyone note one of "modern phone's capabilities" that new app is using? What, moving pieces on chess board is not possible with old phone capabilities but requires new sensor which detect "how smelIy I farted" during the game? Otherwise, without usage of that sensor, playing chess is imposible? Come on...

milan_i

LuftWaffles, I didn't mean to offend you. I quoted you, and all you wrote is true. It's not your opinion but fact. And that's the true that developers are trying to keep up with all new stuff, but I hate the fact that I cannot play live chess on my iPhone...

BTW, my iPhone is not really mine. My employer bought it and I use it for work but also for private needs. I'm IT professional and I'm maintaining computers and network in hotel, autocamp and restorans in camp, etc. But I can't ask my employer to buy me a new phone because I can't play chess :( Old iPhone is working and all I need for job, I still can do with old phone...

In fact, I never bought mobile phone and I'm not planning to buy one just for playing chess...

Hi guys,
I'm bringing up this topic again. Surely, someone should know why everyone with 3gs is suddenly excluded from using the chess.com app. It sounds like a really bad idea in many ways, and as a paying member - usually using the app to play - I find it quite strange that the chess.com team apparently expect me to buy a new phone in order to use their app.

Simply stating that "Phones evolve extremely quickly these days and the iPhone 3GS is all but obsolete," (as LuftWaffels wrote) is absolutely no good reason. And even though one surely cannot expect a phone which is several years old to run everything new that is created, I really think one should expect compatibility between older and newer versions.

Could anyone from the chess.com team please explain why you have chosen not to facilitate such compatibility? And furthermore, what you expect paying members such as myself (and others) to do when you remove one of the most essential parts of the playing experience, namely the app? Stop playing? Get a new phone?

Well, week ago my company bought me new iPhone 6S ;)

New chess.com app is excellent and new iPhone is nice too...
