When I try to chat at a chess game it says I have to be their friend. Is this normal???

It did not used to be like this.

It is there it just says I have to be friend

Clicking on 'Voice' as a basic member will show you 'you have to be friends with the opponent'.

Have you tried pressing F11 on your keyboard to enlarge the browser to see the chat text entry where it says 'send' ?   (Pressing F11 again returns the browser back to normal)
