live chess - can't find opponents

why is it that I never have an opponent during live chess? Do I have to play against a friend or something? I am new to this site and have no clue what I am doing

First of all, live chess and online chess are 2 different things. Which one do you mean?

And no, in both you don't have to play only against friends.
