So what happens when my opponents account gets closed during a game?

You win!

That's happened to me a lot. Don't they just automatically resign or they timeout? Either way, just free rating points.

I just wait for the timeout then, eh? Okay, thx.

When we started the game, earlier today, I think he was rated 1574;

when his account was closed, it had dropped to 1421 Undecided.

It's happened to me. They just lose on time.

Yes, they lose but you don't get any ELO points from them. I had a player 200 points higher than me just now, who closed his account during our game. It says, "So-and-so Out of Time" and that I win etc, but my ELO score stayed EXACTLY where it was....it did not move an iota. I sure hope this is normal!

I think that only happens when you haven't made any non-database moves, user0719

A thousand thanks to Bilbo21 who cleared up the "mystery", for indeed the game that I won by default (which as I said afforded me no points) was but a mere 3 moves in. And as a main line Pirc (by me as Black) in response to his or her 1.e4, things were most definitely still in the book. The no-points-even-though-you-win-policy here makes good sense, because I certainly don't feel as though I "won" anything in that short of a span. Thanks again for your answer!

How strange it sounds to me what you are telling because I played a half a year ago a banned opponent (he was banned while the tournament was still going on) and they gave me some (I think 3 or 4) ratingpoints added to my rating).

Hi Slotboom: Thanks for your input. But I believe you said the player in question, the one that you had the game with and got points from, had been banned. In my own case, the opponent was apparently not been banned but, as stated above by another member, voluntarily closed their account *during* the game. So I believe the two scenarios may have different regulations. It makes sense to me that you got points from a banned player, but were you still "in book" or not?

Hi User0719,

Thanks for your feedback. I understand the difference in our cases. No, we were no longer in the book because I accidentally gave away a pawn, but maybe he was not banned because that particular game , maybe it had to do with another game he was playing.

If the game is live, you get the number of points said as if you won. So if your opponent was a 2000 and you were a 1000 and he got banned, you would gain 16 points.
