I dont know for sure why people would abandon a game because either way, they would lose the game and if they abandon, they would be accused of break the fair play policy anyway. However, there was only one reason I could think of and it is because they "don't like losing a game" so they think if they disconnect, they could get away with it and not lose the game. Even though they do. This may not be exactly what they think, but it is the only thing I could think of. Hope this helps:D
Players who abandon rather than resign?

The pairing logic for Live pairs people that have similar fair play records. You're new to the website (a belated welcome!), so Chess.com doesn't have a fair play record for you. I assure you that the more you play, the more likely you will be paired with someone that doesn't disconnect and has a good fair play record (assuming you have a good fair play record).
I had a similar thing when I started playing here; but just took the win and the rating points and went on to the next game. Now I almost never get disconnected on.

I guess that "runners" are just nasty frustrated people, when they lose they jusy think: "at least my opponent will lose some time and hopeful get bored waiting".
That's what I thought when once, but just once, I did anything similar... not really running away but playing a move every 5 minutes, in an hopeless position (shame on me...). Not just by losing and not only because I gifted that game (silly blunder that turned a winning position in a lost one) but because in my opinion my opponent was nasty. Anyway, my fault.
Usually when I lose I resign. That day... I was frustrated nasty people. Ok, never more!!

Thanks for the perspective. Runners create an interesting paradox for me. I'm horribly impatient but also tremendously competitive. So, my competivie desire overcomes my impatience and I wait the 5 minutes.
Kaynight, my apologies for starting what is obviously a comment subject in this forum. I have not yet found a way to search the forum for previous topics. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated...
Edit....never mind, I finally found the page with the search engine.

I've been on this site for a few weeks now and one aspect of on-line chess puzzles me. I've had several oponents who will just disconnect when they realize they are faced with a loosing position. Any thoughts as to why they don't just resign rather than abandon?
It's because they weren't taught manners by their parents and they hate themselves so they try to "take out" their anger on their oppoents.
And another thread about runners.
Why do you care so much to complain about these threads every time they appear?

Kaynight must like to waste his time commenting on threads he says are a waste of web page space. Guess what, you can ignore the threads that you don't like and get on with your life!
But he does say, "I will not tolerate any nonsense posts. Be aware. Have a nice day" on his profile page. The problem is that his posts are nonsense posts.
Since he says that he's a "time traveler" it's no problem for him to waste his time/life.

Kaynight, I understand. I may be new in here but I'n not new to forums. I've been active on a number of forums over the years - bicycling, motorcycling, triathlon, cars, etc.... All forums have this same issue, newcomers logging in and asking a question that has been asked over and over again. What kind of bike should I buy? Why do I have to use 93 octane in my turbo? What should I get on my pizza? I know it gets old for the senior members but, in my other forums, I just accept it as part of the game. For that reason, I do always try to do a search before I post a question in a new forum. For some reason, the search block didn't show up on my first few forays into this forum....

Anyway, sometimes people are stubborn and hate to resign. I've heard people brag about it, "I've never resigned, I'm so great!!" All that proves is that they're too cowardly to admit they lost. I've resigned lots of times. But abandon? Yikes, that's even worse... It means they're too afraid even to play out the situation or resign! If you hate losing, people, don't play chess.
You can't escape idiots (and that's what people who time out on purpose are). My advice - block them off from playing you again. To do this go to Home > Account > Privacy > Block User. Just enter the player's name and you won't come up against them. I've blocked half a dozen.
Note, to the site - you should create a selection bar to show why someone it being blocked. That way if the person is doing something all the time, they can be weeded out. Or alternately, you could force moves after an appropriate time (say five minutes in a 30 minute game). Then if you don't move shortly after a warning, you lose automatically.

They're angry and don't want their opponents to have the satisfaction of winnng. I've never abandoned a game but I can kind of understand the impulse. It's pretty immature, however.

kaynight obviously likes to clear the rubbish from his/her trolling ground

For what it's worth, I have only abandoned a few games (maybe just once), and it was out of frustration. Typically, even when making a huge blunder I play it out. I've found this will occasionally result in me getting lucky enough that my opponent will fall into a stalemate or I can force a draw.

Any thoughts as to why they don't just resign rather than abandon? Can they really not be aware that an abandon will still result in a loss.....it just takes 5 minutes for it to play out.....I realize there's a potential to have one's account restricted as a result of abandoing games but that doesn't seem to be a deterrent to this behavior.
I don't mean to sound like I'm whining. I am honestly looking for insight from others that would explain ths behavior.....
