I was doing puzzles when I came across this nonsense which doesn't belong in puzzles at all.

Staff, please remove this puzzle as it is totally pointless; one should not have to calculate a forced mate in 3 in a king + rook vs. king.

For the cherry on top, this puzzle is rated 2900+ with a 25% solve rate.

Possibly rated so high as there seems to be multiple ways to do it. I think the required solution may still be the fastest.

Oddly the computer was claiming some of the solutions that seem to work as a draw. Don't think they repeated the position thee times or anything like that. Generally the computer realised it was mate just before mate was delivered. Of course I could be missing somthing obvious - I am no expert happy.png

It may be the fastest, but it's absolutely pointless. While in other puzzles the winning line is by far the best or the only winning line.

Here, it is the difference between mate in 3 and mate in 4+.

There are a number of similar tactics and the issue is that it's a 50 move position, so anything but the fastest mate is a draw. When presented with a "mate no matter what" tactic, it's going to be mate in as few moves as possible.

Gotta agree...it is kinda stupid.

If you're talking about on this problem, it's not. Any other moves but the solution are draws due to 50 moves without a capture or pawn move...

Seriously, seemed easy.

I still think this puzzle is silly because no high-level player will ever be in danger of the 50-move rule in a king and rook vs king endgame. In order to solve this puzzle, you have to assume that white has severely misplayed the past 46 moves, which seems like a very weird assumption to have to make.

It's a cool exercise involving opposition and zugzwang, but I don't think it's appropriate to call it a puzzle in the traditional sense.
