Can someone tell me where I can find or give me the exact calculation for how many points are deducted for missing a puzzle solution? (Finding the solution always seems to award 5 points.) Or is Chess.com keeping that as proprietary information?

That's all the available information. But if you're always getting 5 points then you're taking significantly longer that the average solve time to complete. In that case, a correct answer will give 5 points.

The article has a lot of exclamation points but not much details. I appreciate your reply and the Chess.com website, and I'll just be happy that it does keep me motivated.

The calculation on a failed puzzle is a normal Glicko rating change based on the puzzle rating vs the solver rating. Some puzzles have partial solutions that will award points and that may be a set number of points for getting those moves but it's also possible that it scales based on time taken too
