Slow as Molasses

What's with the site yesterday and today?.......sometimes the pages load quickly (as they should) but other times they take 15-30 seconds to load. What gives?

It would be better if the title was Slower than Molasses in January. :)

seems fast to me. just remember - this is the internet :) there are bits of information flying around crazy pipes and connections all over the world. sometimes it doesn't work that well :) maybe it's one of our servers acting up. maybe it's your local network. maybe it's that a truck ran into a powerline. i think we're still 10 years away from being able to expect ZERO downtime or slowness. even myspace and facebook have these problems, and they are billion dollar companies :)

also, one that that DOES help is not having ads to load ;)

Oh my god! It all makes sense now! The evil ads company are trying to destroy Chess.com!!

Either that or erik just wants more people to go premium... hey ;)?

it's a fact - ad networks have to load their own code. so you are now exposed to their download times as well :) and yes, i DO want more people to go premium. is there a problem with me trying to recoupe my investment in chess.com (let alone make some money - oh my!)?

If it's any consolation, this site is super fast for me now that i'm on firefox 3. Wink

It was buggy and slow and, at times/in places, annoying, in firefox 2, but so were most other sites with anything other than just text on them.  Firefox 2 sucked big time.

Speaking of facebook, it has to be the slowest site I've ever used.  Even though it seems quicker now with firefox3, it still takes maybe 30 seconds or more to load just the login page.

Yesterday, concurrent with pages here taking forever to load, I had other tabs in Explorer open and went to MSNBC.com, NYTimes.com, etc. and they loaded immediately so (anecdotally) it appears that the problem was with this site. Not trying to be a whiner but thought I should bring it up.

PS: today the pages are loading normally.

PPS: love the site and am contemplating Premium. And no Erik, there is nothing wrong with wanting to recoup your investments and make a few bucks. I wish you all the success your endeavors bring.

Erik just so you know I'm dead broke but once I finish school I'm for sure becoming a paying member no question. Thanks for letting us have all this awesomeness for free!
