Generally random but there may be settings for custom games where you can choose to play white or black only. (Not entirely sure but I figure there ought to be. As for the games being random without the custom games, I'm certainly sure of this.)

For rated games, you can't choose color unless your directly challenge a friend. Color gets allocated based on which player is more due black.
For unrated games you can choose color.
