Tactics Trainer Problem Difficulty

Sceadungen. It's probably a technical issue to do with your browser. I'm not experiencing that.

Josechu

See this thread. Maybe some of the problems reported here match your problem. http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/bugs

erik

sorry guys. we had to revert. still working on this

Josechu

Thanks for letting us know Erik.

I am now consistently getting tactics 400 points below my current rating.  I have solved 32 out of my last 35 problems but only gained about 30 points...  Do I just need to reset my rating at this point or will this get fixed??

Campione

I've dropped 800 points in a few weeks. Very frustrating

gimmewuchagot

Yeah, it just makes a bad day turn worse, when you try to fix it.

I wasn't saying you are a master level player, was using it as an example. The disparities were proportional that I was referring to. To look at it another, using your example of turning a win into a draw or blowing a draw and then losing, remember the key to it in my statement of choosing winning lines and being rewarded for it. If there are 10 winning lines, all with different scores according to an engine, when choosing tactics, we should be rated and rewarded according to our ability, not our ability or inability to match an engines top choice. Top GM's don't even do that everytime and if you happened to be able to do it OTB, or at Chess.com, you would be accussed of cheating. We shouldn't be training ourselves to play like engines. We don't even understand their logic past a certain point, no matter our level of play...

You should really accept the obvious.

Since it's supposed to always be only one correct line in tactics trainer, I don't understand what you are talking about. The correct line match the engines top choice, which is why a computer can check if it is a good puzzle, but that doesn't mean we train ourselves to play like an engine. We just train at solving tactics. To give you an idea of good problems (which isn't true for all problems), below is guidelines for new problems (taken from this forum).

1)Each best move is at least +2.5 better than the next best move

2) The position resulting from each next best move is evaluated by a strong computeras having a value of no greater than +0.3 (up to +1 may be allowed if the main move is very strong.

So at each step the solution move must be the only winning move (otherwise the problem is 'ambiguous'), or only move to prevent a loss (for example perpetual check or stalemate). If a tactic is very strong you may need to remove/add quite a lot of material from the starting position. This is stricter than guidelines issued by chess.com. Please don't use this thread to debate whether higher values should be allowed)

examples allowed :

solution move +2.7, next best move +0.2

solution move 0, next best move -2.6

solution move +0.8, next best move -1.8

solution move +10, next best move +0.8

solution move forced mate, next best move +0.9

Examples not allowed :

solution move forced mate, next best move mate in more moves

solution move forced mate, next best move greater than +1.0

The examples not allowed are extremely common

I posted that as examples of good problems. It is stated those are stricter than guidelines issued by chess.com.

@erik (if he reads this), what are the guidelines issued by chess.com for good tactic problems? In the tactics trainer help center it is only stated that chess.com are "making sure there is only one clear winning line". Not only is it often unclear how big advantage is enough to be winning (the engines can't always count until mate after all), in some problems you are playing for a draw and therefor the wording is wrong there. Is there more clear guidelines by chess.com that can be read somewhere?

I reset my settings and have been so incredibly happy ever since.  I had done 14250 problems over several years with a decent passrate (45%) and a high score of 2437.  But then for four straight weeks I got nothing but 1400-1600 rated problems.  Naturally my score dropped significantly (minus 35 points if I missed, plus 2-3 points if I solved) and I gradually built it back up a bit, but I just hated only solving 1400-1600 rated problems.  After four days of resetting my settings, I'm already back up to mid-1900's and getting problems of the same ratings.

gimmewuchagot

I don't want to reset my history. Is there a way to reset my history, without wiping out my rating?

Martin0

@gimmewuchagot, I think it might be possible for a staff member to reset your history and then set your rating to the same as your current rating. Of course this would reset your rating history and your rating top. I recommend sending a ticket to staff and ask them if it can be done (link to send ticket page).

If it can't be done the glicko system will change your rating fast at the beginning anyway (after resetting history) and if your worthy of your rating you will get to the same level anyway in not too much time.

gimmewuchagot

Hm, maybe I can ask them to keep my peak rating too.

The_Evil_Ducklings

My rating dropped from a previous 3 year range of 2600 to 2300 suddenly in a 1 week period. After trying to move it back up (to prove I was not experienceing  early onset Alzheimer's), I tried the suggestion of resetting  my rating. It seems to be working as I quickly moved back to 2375 in 50 problems before getting tired. The problem seems to be one of problem difficulty. I was getting 1-6 points for fairly hard problems, while losing 38 for incorrect solutions. I would get 15 problems right, move up like 25 points, then miss one failing down 38 points. Some of the 1 point problems were quite hard too, like 6-8 move shots.

I am still having this problem where the position jumps to a random position

I notice that others are having the same problem, I am running Windows 8 with Internet Explorer, please if you say it is my browse.4r what is the fix, this machine is brand new.

Sceadungen

Absolutely useless when I try to post a comment it jumps to the next problem, it is leaping all over the place,.

Sort it....

Erik always recommends Chrome, although some prefer Firefox.  Internet Explorer is not really recommended.  I hated the idea of switching just because I'm not real comfortable around computers, but it was actually easy to do and the chess.com experience was much improved.

Hello!

A small update on this problem, which still exists and maybe got even worse?! Look at my recent Tactics Trainer activity:

This has been going on for a month now. As you can see, no matter how well or poorly I performed, the next problem difficulty seems to be random and rather low. And chess.com advertises with an enhanced experience for their Tactics Trainer? What's the reason for this changed behaviour of difficulty? I would appreciate an (official) answer :) Thanks!

Greetings,

Kurai

Just noticed that the third TT in your list 0283111 is rated 2493 but when you open it, it is rated 1300s. Strange.

erik
