is it my imagination or has the tactics trainer gotten much harder in the last few days . i used to be sitting in the 1600 to 1800 area but have dived down to 900 in 2 days , i cant have gotten that bad i 2 days ?can i? i cant seem to get above 1000 now...please don't tell me my tactical eye is going blind !

i noticed that too. problems seem to give a lot less points and are harder. if you look at the average rating, it went down quite a bit. i think it started when they rearanged the site recently.

I noticed this also.  It's as if we must now see ourselves as we really are.  Not a pretty picture!

Wow, I and here I thought I was the only one!! Its refreshing to know its not just me. I was in the 1200's, now I'm in the 7-800's. I've even fallen as low as 500. It seems like the point system is a lot harder.

I also noticed this..
I was around 1300-1400 and dropped very low in a few days... I'm now at 550 Embarassed and it's hard to get back up.

I've given up on even looking at that rating--it doesn't seem to reflect any real level of competence or difficulty. Also, I feel that the timer puts an arbitrary limit on my analytic skills.

Personally, I wish there was just a tracking of a success/fail ratio, not a translation into a "rating". And it would be nice if the timer could be personally set to a value of my choice--faster, slower, or not at all.

thanks for the insight guys! we're working on it...

what a relief. i cant possibly be that bad.

Can someone please post more details on this problem. What I'd like to see is specifics about what problem you failed or solved (what was the problem Id), how many rating points you lost, and how many correct moves you got (and a guess at what your rating adjustment should have been.) I'm looking at logs and database and everything looks in order. I need some examples of potential rating adjustment errors.

Cleptomania
I do not think it's a problem.  It's just a tough grader!   You can adjust it to give us all a 2500 rating, but it is still the same training.  There is nothing wrong with having some humble pie.  (Except when I have to have it, Ha!)

Ha wow this makes me feel better. I was wondering how I went from like 1600 to 900... I thought I just lost the sight of the jedi.

so have I

Ok, I've undone some minor changes I made to the RD calculations, which is the only thing changed recently so I'm guessing that was the issue. I'm not sure how this would make ratings trend downwards, but then again, I don't have a PhD in mathematics either. What was working is better left untouched. :)  However, because its not a TRUE glicko, I've removed the RD stat from the stats page, because i think it was causing many people confusion.

I vote we dump the timer; it doesn't make any sense to me that you can pass more than you fail and still lose points on your rating. Especially since some of the problems aren't clear at all as to what we are trying to do, so a certain amount of time must first be spent trying to figure out the question, then trying to figure out the answer.

I would prefer to get rid of the timer , and just have a certain ammount of time available to solve the puzzle , if it is solved within the time limit you get full points instead of the partial points you would get now

My internet just dropped after a long posting, so this is a shorter synopsis of what I said. The time given on a problem is 2 times the AVERAGE time spent by all other users who SOLVED the problem. So....you are directly compared and competing against other users who solved a particular problem. We ARE working on a new feature for those that dont care about the competition, and just want to do tactics at their leisure, to disable ratings and timer, and select a min-max rating band for problems they want to do.

Huh, pretty funny. I was noticing the same thing. The funny part came when I noticed a severe drop in my score on TT but a marked rise in recognizing tactical opportunities in my real games. I just figured, who cares about my rating on TT, as long as I am playing better chess.

However, recently, TT has begun to demoralize me a little.

Thanks, everyone---especially those of you on the staff. This is great.

yay , thank god for that i thought i was in trouble but now i know i am not alone . I thought the ratings given were a bit generous as i had reached nearly 1900 at one stage which is a lot stronger than i am at the moment so maybe with the changes it will make it more realistic if i can reach the 1400-1500 level . thanks

I thought it was just me... glad I read this thread.

The timer alters the amount of rating points given out, the quicker you solve the problem the more points. This makes sense to me, stronger players see patterns quicker. However, to have the option to remove it would also be good. I noticed that it got harder also, but like many users, I realise that our original ratings really did flatter us.
