I am in this rated tournament and my opponent timed out after 3 moves ...

Why have I not been given the rating points for it???

I think it has to be 4 or 5 moves, cant remember which, before you get rating points

I think its more than 3 moves to get the points

Once I got a quick checkmate on someone and didn't get any lol

You don't get points for timeouts if the game lasts less than 5 moves.

Right so they can time out and not lose any rating points but if they resign they do???

That is wrong

But why??

If someone joins a tournament/ team match/ normal game and they time out then the other person should get the points for it.

So it seems. Check out my games archive - KUtime03 timed out against me on 2nd Jan 2010. The game lasted for 1 move. He didn't lose any points and I didn't gain any points. I've had a few of these in the past.

It does seem to rather encourage timeouts if you don't want to compete in the next round of a tournament - it's certainly better for your rating than withdrawing.

Ya, I don't get that either.  They should both count the same, IMO.  Another poster here said they lose the points on the timeout but you don't gain any.  How in the heck does that work?

Not even sure now if they DID lose any points

I suppose the argument is that the game should still be in the opening stages and thus there is probably no advantage for either player after just 4 moves, but it seems that if you throw the game for timing out then you should forfeit points just the same as resigning. Bring it up with korai.

What is even sadder is that the person who timed out against me logged in yesterday ... Undecided

Deliberate time outs???

I'm going to be the confrontational poster who says, "You didn't actually do anything. Why do you deserve the points?"

Because she stuck to the time controls.

I joined the tournament knowing if I lost a game whether by checkmate, by resignation or by time out then I lose points why do I NOT deserve them??

i agree i think its wrong you dont get points if someone timeouts at start of game.

Well I've looked through the past games of many a player and often been amazed to see that points are even gained or lost for even 0 moves.

So you should have got the points weather youè think it's morally right or wrong.

have you tried simply refreshing your online chess home page Donna?

I guess if Ivanchuk didn't show up in a game against Karjakin and forfeit at move 0 (or 1) he would lose rating points and Karjakin gain some.... It is unfair, but if chess.com has another policy, that is their business, and they should answer your question. For me - a game is a game, a point is a point and so on. I personally cannot see the difference from a forfeit by time, resign, or other legal loss of game. And I cannot see any significant difference if the game is 2 moves long or 115 moves long... But I am not running this lovely site, luckily for both me and you all.. LOL
