I don't add people very often, so I don't know what the messages look like but it is possible the people are not accepting friend requests and the message you are receiving is incorrect for what is actually happening.
It works for me. Maybe chat to them a bit beforehand? Maybe as soon as you friend them they delete their account? You can friend me...
