Weirdness/bug with Opening Explorer?

Sort:

After the standard opening of Nimzo-Indian, Rubinstein Varation:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. c3 Bb4 4. e3 O-O

The Opening explorer shows 10,341 games that continue with 6 Bd3, 5339 with Nge2, and 5129 with Ne2.  Those last two moves are, obviously, the same (since the other knight is pinned).

This makes no sense.

(FWIW, Lichess and chesstempo both have a ratio of about 2-to-1 in favor of Bd3, which leads me to believe that the correct number in chess.com should be in the 5000's).

The Explorer looks at positions and one ply later. So the ones that have the option to move the pinned knight are ones where the night was moved there to block the check.

The Explorer is not looking at move order.

Actually, that's not what I'm seeing. Nge2 is the only option; Ne2 is not a line...

'Master games - game type is not a valid parameter!' This is appearing when trying to access opening explorer Martin, any idea what's going on? Yet another bug?

OK, that's really weird -- this is what I see!  How can it be different?!?

I notice the "Nge2 5,339 matches" your graphic , but what's with the "Ne2 5,129" on my graphic?

I bug reported that yesterday.

Is that from the website but on the  opening tab of a Daily game? If so there may be a bug

If I understand your question, the answer is: it's not from a daily game.

I got there this way:  from my laptop, I clicked on learn, then analysis, then I played the moves while the opening explorer was on

Re-upping.

I reported the same bug (with a different opening) in August, too.  On August 4 @Martin_Stahl said he was able to re-create it and formally reported it.

I just checked again today -- 8 months to the day that I started this thread.

Thus I re-up.
