What was the reasoning behind this change? What was the harm in displaying points?

yes, for NOW they just keep track of your activity. in the future they will have other meanings such as how well trusted you are, adding additional features to your profile, earning other priviledges, etc

They don't show in the homepage anymore but that explains what you can do to get them.
Adding additional information in case that page changes:
