what does points mean in our profiles?

It's a sign of social activity. There are some Achievements tied to points as well.

Time is being wasted, indeed.

The site is big enough now, offering anything for activity would just invite a lot of low quality content (and spam) or at least a more of it.

They're not. They are just a measure of how active you are socially.

If your points exceed the number of puzzles you’ve solved or the number of games you’ve played, you would be better off spending your time on Facebook.
