Premium members have the option to have their games put on vacation automatically, if they have available vacation time.

Does this mean that if I've started a game the other party can effectively stop the clock and I sit not knowing when the game will resume?

Sort of. Presumably you get notified when your opponent moves and it is your turn. That still holds.

And you have vacation too. The difference is that you have to start yours manually.

Ok. It would be good idea if you were a) notified, b) told how long the "vacation" would last.
I tend to play one game at a time so it's extremely inconvenient to be left in limbo.

Get the little gold star and lose the ads and gain the automatic vacation days. If you go past your due time, your games pause and you can pick them up later.
