what's wrong with the timers

this has happened a few times, but when the opponents time hits 00.00, if he plays a move, the clock gives him another second. Recently, this had happened twice in a game, and when it was his turn yet again, my timer ran out.

Your opponent likely has between 0.9 and 0.1 second. Are you playing on the app?
If you have a link to a specific game, it would be easy to see the server timestamps to see what the official clocks actually were
