It seemed to me black could've retaken en passant to avoid the mate. What do you think?

The pawns need to be in line with each other to take en passant. It's to take the pawn as if it had only moved one square instead of two. Black couldn't have taken even if white had only moved the pawn one square.

Damn! You're right, I've missed that. It's basics, right? Thank you !

Black can only take en passant when his pawn is on the 4th rank, white when his pawn is on the 5th rank.

I don't think it's ever possible to retake via en passant... is it?

Agree with quote no 7 (macer) .... Either u take the pawn via en passant or you don't take .... In either case there is nothing like retaking the pawn ...

So this just happened and, as it seems to me, white should be able to use en passant to get out of mate here; however, Chesspresso, the app I'm using, counted this as a mate. I would have mated the player, anyway, but I'm just curious if, technically, en passant can be used to get out of mate? I should think so.

Yes, you can use e.p. to get out of mate.

Assuming the move was f7-f5 and not f6-f5
