Why does disconnecting lower your elo?

I've lost some games in which I had a winning position, not because I blundered but because I "abandoned" the game (disconnected), why is this a thing? Why can't the platform just, make it a draw if it's due to disconnecting? I don't see any reason to have a penalty other than if the player intentionally abandoned the game.
