Why is bishop and knight a draw by insufficient material?

My opponent had bishop and knight and ran out of time. The game said draw by insufficient material.

My understanding is that it is possible to checkmate with bishop and knight. So bishop and knight are sufficient material to checkmate? Do I not understand something?

Appreciate any explanations on the matter. Thanks.

If the side with time doesn't have sufficient material to mate then it's a draw
