I mentioned the abuse of good sense in the closing of your thread, “For Staff”, while objecting via email to a foolish bot-mute a couple of days ago. Turns out copy and pasting the “Post Turtle” story caused me to utter the word id**t. In rare action, my mute lasted only an hour. The staff person also acknowledged that the bot muting people is “imperfect”.
why is it...?
you were lucky in that instance that someone was there to notice how the site failed you. that is not often the case, and, even an hour mute for writing common language is a big problem the site has not addressed for over a year.
what gets me is all of the bs emails i receive about 'new' things here and asking for money. how about fixing what is broken first?
Most rare is that the staff member who lifted my mute also acknowledged that the bots are not perfect. They are a problem—a serious one. I’d like to see the problem openly addressed as such.
Moderators are not paid so aren't paid mouthpieces. Their time is volunteered and many moderate content as they come across it.
For example, I spend most of my time in the main forums; General Discussions, Community, Feedback, and Support topics. I also start the day looking at the unanswered topics. The vast majority of my moderation happens in that process.
Places like Off Topic are very lightly moderated and some things that may be borderline are likely to not get moderated as quickly or as strictly as the same content in other topics, with some major exceptions.
Regarding the auto-mod, it's not perfect but helps minimize the amount of abuse that can get posted. Moderators and Staff can't be everywhere or catch every piece of content, so some level of automation is required. My understanding is that staff are looking into some better options, ones that are able to be more context sensitive.

A poster who has been on this site fifteen years and made thousands of constructive posts should be trusted a bit more, I would think. The rogue bots could limit themselves to people who have joined in the past year and still keep out most of what they are after.
Yeah, probably that would work in the majority of cases, though there are a lot of long term members that occasionally post things that need moderation as well, so it's not always going to be a great solution.
I know the moderation management and other staff involved in abuse prevention have been discussing the issue and as mentioned, are looking at some solutions that will hopefully improve things.

on the first part, come on now. some pine to be in a position of power (think: cops), even if it's a hall monitor here on cc. i don't put you in that category, but the mods that have locked my other topics never have an answer why.
on the latter, i hope the effort is worth the wait. we really need it.
here is an issue we regularly face:
my "for staff..." topic was locked for violations of tos (even though the locker won't point to said violations). there was one troublemaker there before it was locked and i can only guess that person was the reason for the lock.
so, why not just delete the posts that are clear violations? i was not online in time to block the tool (as i have with clowney, above). like mods, any individual isn't online here 24/7. if some jerk runs amok in a topic, wouldn't it be best to remove jerk's posts instead of locking the topic?
that topics about site functionality, or, dysfunction, are locked regularly while extremely obvious violations of tos remain for months?
i'm going to hazard a guess that the powers that be just don't give a sh*t.
I'll also guess that mods are *hired* to be a mouthpiece for the site. because, they are not informed of where things are going. they cannot, or, will not, answer questions about why things are so screwy. but, some feel they need to make a name for thenselves, so they lock topics questioning decisions/actions/ or lack thereof. you know, so it seems they are 'doing something'.
i still cannot see my activity on my homepage. this is getting close to a year where it doesn't appear. ask, and the only answer is one that is bull-'we are developing new processes and that takes bandwidth where the activity is not seen'.
that is not an answer. that is a lame excuse.
my other topics about issues have been locked by d*ck mods, claiming tos violations. funny, when i write them asking where there were said violations, i have never received a response.
i will continue to start topics like this hoping someone will be able to express our concerns and questions about the site to higher ups where we might get some answers, and, more importantly, action (aside from locking all my topics).
so, use this topic (as long as it is around) to express the issues you see. and hope.
