Why is my chat disabled whenever I play my friends?

Whenever I just play a random stranger, the chat works fine. However when I challenge my friends in a game, the chat is disabled for me, my friends can still chat but I cannot! My friends didn't block me, mute me, or have chat turned off or anything like that. Pls help.
