I got a new laptop with Windows 8 a few months back. It took a while to get used to it and I wished that I had got a Windows 7. It is different and took quite a bit of time to work out.

I have now adapted it and got rid of all the crap I dont use, set up my desk top and just avoid the App page.

Now its fine, and it is very quick.

I agree.  Once you get rid of all the crap on the Start page that you don't want,  and set up your desk top,  it's a much different experience.  I actually really like Windows 8.

I use Win 8 for 6 months now, basically when it came out and was offered at a low price. Windows 8 is more stable, it's memory handling is much better than Windows 7, in multitasking it seems to be a little quicker than Win 7. Definitely an improvement in technical respect vs. Win 7.

I had one or two hardware issues with some kind of incompatible drivers. After some nervewrecking deinstallation-reinstallation routines, I could resolve them. Win 7 never gave me any issues in compatibility respects but guess that is Win 8 growing pains.

However the "Metro" GUI is just horrible, I absolutely despise it and the people who programmed and accepted it at Microsoft. On a bigger PC screen (mine is 22"), it looks like a screen made for 3 year old illiterates and is an offence. Where they hid the turn-off options is just one very telling example how misconceived this GUI is for the PC. I always go straight to the Desktop. But after 6 months, I consider it just a minor annoyance.

So if it wasn't for that crap default GUI, I would actually quite like Win 8. As is, I merely tolerate it for its overall technical superiority over Win 7.

I haven't used windows 8 so I can't really judge but I'm sure some apps like rainmeter can be used to make things a little easier and prettier lol.

I think they want to make everything like a smart phone and it just doesnt work when applied to computers.

I haven't used Windows 8. This discussion helps confirm that I want to delay it as long as possible. I find Windows 7 to be exceptional.

I dislike lots of icons on my screen, but do place a few on the taskbar for one-click access. In W7, I'm able to place the taskbar where I want it (on the left). Has Windows 8 eliminated the taskbar? It appears to be in the image in post #49.

Speed is nice. I anticipate more serious compatibility issues with Chess Informant (which does not get along with W7--I suspect because its data files are stored in the program folder rather than "my documents").

That brings me to a pet peeve about all recent Microsoft OSs. I need documents, music, videos, etc. I know they are mine if they are on my computer. Calling everything "my" this or that is aggravating.

There is still a taskbar.

You can adapt it to what you want, but it takes time if your not used to it, it is completely different to any of the previous OSs.

Next time I will just get a Mac, as it seems Windows is trying to copy, but just no where near as good. Only slight problem is the price.....

Problem with Macs: most useful chess software (ChessBase and Chess Informant publications) remain incompatible. True that Macs can run Windows software, but only by sacrificing all advantages.

I drink the kool-aid with my iPad, though.

For all of you people who are saying you hate the start menu (can't imagine why, I actually think it looks good), Windows 8.1, or "Blue" is coming out, which will have the option of booting to the desktop (when you start your computer, it will start at the desktop). You won't ever need to go the the Start Screen, unless you want to search for something, and its not really a big deal.

Is that going to be a regular automatic Windows update,  or will you have to manually download it from Microsoft?

Its going to be offered for free to all Windows 8 users if thats what you mean.

There are programs like WINE that can help with that.

Windows 8 is an idea that is ahead of its time. It is only feasible when touchscreen desktops and laptops become more commonly used, which can only happen when prices go down. Something that isn't happening anytime soon.

If Microsoft had any common sense they would make a patch that changes the interface at least back to Windows 7.  People are avoiding Win8 and sales are significantly down.  The public has spoken with their dollars... the new interface is a major flop

Well, all touchscreens get covered in fingerprints, no matter whether its a desktop or a tablet.

But now that I think of it, it must hurt alot to hold your arm vertically when working. Touchscreen desktops don't seem that good anymore.

Laptops you can change the angle, to make it more comfortable.

I believe that I mentioned programs like WINE. I haven't personally used them, but everyone I've talked to who has assures me that most of the advantages of owning a Mac are lost.

If chess software is a small part of your world, perhaps its a solution.

I use ChessBase and Chess Informant software daily, and often for many hours on end. I'm locked into Windows until those who design this software free me, or until someone produces something better than ChessBase for the Mac, and assures that it can read all my CI files as well as Chess Informant Expert (without violating their copyright).

WINE is a good idea, but SCOTCH is a better one ^_^

The more I use the touch screen on my iPad to type, the more I need strong drink. Tonight it's merlot. Tomorrow may be bourbon.

Don't forget the Whisky.

And the next day it may be both ^_^

Rum and Chenin Blanc with loads of fresh chopped fruit and a bit of club soda when it gets a bit warmer outside.

Bourbon is whiskey; so is Scotch. But with the e missing, you must be referring to Jameson's.
