Hello Help and Support.

I had planned to visit relatives today so a few hours ago i activated my Vacation Time.

The planned visit just got cancelled and i was wondering if i deactivate my Vacation Time again would this be construed as Vacation Abuse?

The accusation of Vacation Abuse is made when players delay playing, for instance they do other things on the site while their status is "Vacation". So coming off of vacation status is the opposite of abuse.

Nah, I would say you're fine.

Cheers TadDude and Furtiveking.

Better come off "Vacation" then !

Appreciate the swift response.

You'll lose a whole day of vacation time, though. This rule was instituted after people were complaining about other people using hours of vacation at a time to allow for more thinking time in their games. So the minimum length for a single vacation is now 24 hours.

True but it does not mean anything more negative than staying on vacation.

As well, if not ready to play right away, extra time is added to the clock. It works out the same.

Not true.

Doing other things on the site while your status in your correspondence games is on vacation is not abuse.

For example, if you were on vacation but came to the site to make a move in a non-vacation tournament you would consider that abuse?

Or you came to chess.com to check your chess.com e-mail?

Or you had five minutes free and came to the site to play a couple of live chess games before you had to get back to work/play/family oblivation?

Or you had a few minutes to check the forums, but not several hours to devote to make a move in some of your long games?

No, vacation abuse is typically the cry of players who think they are winning in their slow games and who don't understand that vacation and clock management is part of correspondence chess. It's nobody's business but my own how I use my vacation time. Anybody who can't handle that needs to stop playing correspondence chess and go back to yahoo! chess.

The accusation occurs in the circumstance described. In practice it is likely impossible to make a case that will get the site to adjudicate a game or sanction a player.

I added this to the Online Tournament Information Store earlier today.

"There are constant complaints when players go on vacation status especially if they visit the site to do other things. The word "vacation" is the cause of the problem. It should really be "Time for me to do something else than play you"."
