A neat little trick you can use against people who won't resign in losing positions

Umm, won't this just give them hopes to hang on and win on time, drawing the game out even more?

Nah if you have enough time they will know they can't win on time either

Why so eager to frustrate and upset your opponents? Lots of animosity here toward our fellow chess players.

Anywho, if your opponent is losing and is taking a long time, it usually means:

1) They can't find any good moves, and they are calculating different options, trying to find something decent

or

2) They've realized that they are losing, and they are looking back through the moves to see where they might have gone wrong ...

They also kind of frustrate me when they keep playing on when they are clearly lost, I'm just returning the favor (we are quite literally doing the same thing, they are wasting my time and I'm wasting theirs). Also when I use this trick I make sure it's pretty clear to both players that I am definitely much better (like not in complicated positions or when they have counterplay) so for number 1 it literally doesn't matter even if they find the best move they will lose anyway and are just wasting time. For number 2, why would they look back through the moves DURING the game? That just wastes both players time, they could resign and then look through it, and if they plan to play on after it, it just drains their clock for something they can just check after the game

You're just wasting your own time, bro. Obviously, if they cared about their own time that much, they would just resign without any extra encouragement from you. If you're so far ahead, instead of waiting, why don't you just make the moves it takes to win? They'll probably resign when you make their position worse, but not when you're just sitting there doing nothing -__-

I often feel like after my opponent makes a pretty bad mistake, they are obviously gonna be frustrated and they won't be thinking entirely logically and will just proceed to play a bunch of moves out of anger in an attempt to try to get a win. Their brain just cools down while waiting and then they realize they are dead lost. Also: playing on and slowly beating them while they are dead lost can take 3-5 minutes depending on when they decide to resign, this can take like 30 seconds to a minute if it does work

19 does the arbiter not do anything??

I do this in my OTB games , once I'm completely winning I just let my time run out to like 10 seconds and then play slowly and hang pieces and wont move it just to annoy my opponents

Lol wait this sounds funny AF. If I ever play in a chess tournament any time soon I'm gonna try this LOL

How? It's within the rules of chess you are allowed to do that

Snowchlobe

28 it's not allowed, it's stalling. An arbiter in England would warn the player and if they keep doing it then they would give the opponent the win.

Snowchlobe

29 you can only claim a win if your completely winning and your opponent is stalling. Arbiters won't give a win when they're refusing to resign and playing fast in my experience.

Snowchlobe

In the first scenario I don't think you can claim the win unless the opponent is taking their time thinking still. Trust me my brother never resigns and gets into these situations ALL the time.

Snowchlobe

They will unless the opponent is moving immediately. They let it go and tell you to just play the mate in that case.

navergonnagiveyouup

i have played a lot of people who would just try to win on time and if they are trying to waste my time then i am basically giving them a free win by waiting for 2-3 minutes. also if they are dedicated to wasting your time they usually just make a few moves so you cant abort and then just let their clock run out.

So I've played many rapid games on this website, and throughout my journey I noticed that a lot of the time people will not resign when in completely lost positions for whatever reason. However I have came up with a simple trick you can do against these players that will usually result in them just resigning. Also this is intended for rapid and make sure you have enough time to do this. But what you want to do is, once your position is winning, you just want to leave the chess game and do absolutely nothing for like 2-3 minutes when it is your turn. Just open the forums or get some water or something like that while waiting. Trust me, it will piss them off SO MUCH. It's even better if you do it right after they make the mistake, like if they leave their knight hanging, you just leave and they angrily think to themselves "WHY IS MY OPPONENT NOT MOVING THE KNIGHT IS RIGHT THERE!!!!". Then they will usually just resign out of anger, or the 2-3 minutes will give them the time to realize that they are gonna lose and they will resign. And if they don't resign after like 2 minutes, just make a move and then start taking like 20-30 seconds on each move after that, especially if your next move is obvious. Trust me it will frustrate them so much and most of the time they will just resign

Edit: Also just to clarify some things, this is not intended as stalling. It just gives your opponent a bit of time for their logical reasoning to come back and realize they are lost and resign, it is mutually beneficial. If they want to continue the game, I will continue playing as normal. Also when people stall, they are dead lost and their 100% purpose is to waste your time, while in this you can also think of tactics and moves you can play so it's using your time efficiently

point is, not sure if it’s gonna work because you don’t know what’s behind your opponent’s walls

It seems to work for me like almost every time. I could go back and link some games but that's too much effort

Trrr te What do you define as lost?
Luckily, No one has stalled me when that are winning, so I probably shouldn’t worry, but I would hate to have that happen when I still have hope to win

For me I win 100% of games when I am up a piece and my opponent doesn't have a large attack on my king and my opponents know that. For higher players it could be just a pawn or a bit of a positional advantage and for lower players it would probably have to be 0 counterplay too or maybe a queen

So you request good sportsmanship from your opponent, but you are trying to annoy him if he uses his time to think about a problem.

Wasting my time in a completely dead position isn't good sportsmanship, in fact it's even worse because they can just resign at any point to finish the game while I have to slowly run them down

I wont resign because I never give up on my dreams

and at that moment my dream is to win the game

if I cant win
