Like most things in life...Moderation.  I personally do not drink, except maybe a shot or two of vodka once or trice a year.  As someone that struggled with drinking earlier in my life.  I can tell you this.  NO ONE enjoys drinking till they black out, or get drunk.  They like me drank in excess to numb pain.  Now those that can envoy the occasional glass of wine, beer, hard alcohol?  Thats how you do it.

It’s all or nothing for me.

So tonight, I’m drinking but not chessing. Friends shouldn’t let friends drink and chess.

Its the nieces, friends, camp fire and bbq.

A friend called me earlier today.  Both he and his girlfriend struggle with alcohol.  He called to let me know that his girlfriend is back in the hospital due to drinking til she blacked out.   She passed out and hit her head, so now she is in the hospital.  The same thing happened last November.  To this day she refuses to admit she is an alcoholic.

fake story, alcohol data has been known to reduce anxiety/depression

This is the same bottle from Friday night's party, the only difference is being Saturday night and I’m drinking alone but I won’t be playing rapid or blitz and burning off those points like I use to do lol

OTB I’m forced to play sober which is why I am competitive with the 1500-1800 bracket. Here, I lose and win between 1200-1800 players. Priorities?

not drinking enough

Cheers!

If you really want to advance in chess, it’s a big sacrifice. I choose work, life and social balance but want chess to fit in there some where.

So a goal of 1500 at the moment is obtainable and I will work towards that.

Alcohol is a depressant so by it's nature it acts as a downer and it amplifies depression not resolve it. So fake data. I'm going through a Bipolar diagnosis which is pretty obvious so that also shows that alcohol definitely does not reduce depression.

I admire people who can use alcohol in moderation but when I started drinking every day after work I knew it was becoming a problem and never did anything about it until 20 years later. I'm on a charity run programme to put me through rehab and will then never drink again. I can't wait for that day when I'll feel like I'm 20 again. To anyone reading this thinking it's too late - It's never too late.

Do not consider consuming alcohol in improving any skill other than the consumption of alcohol.

I've noticed a few videos of Magnus Carlson online where he is playing while drunk and often with a group of other people. I don't like the idea of Magnus suggesting playing while drunk is an added challenge to any sport and it's not a good message.

Maybe he's angling to be the Foster Brooks of a new generation...

I play drunk all the time. It is much harder, than playing sober. How I wish, there could be a tournament only for drunks.

I'm working on that!   involves one minute moves and if one doesn't make a move in that minute,  he/she has two choices.   one choice, take a shot of whatever liquor is in the room or get slapped by his/her opponent.

Alcohol damages the brain. I would avoid it for that reason alone.
