Just a heads-up.
The final position is very balanced. If anything I think white is ahead (because of the two bishops) but there is certainly not a lot in it. I think a draw is a likely outcome.
What I meant by "locked up" is that I would try and reduce the potential squares for his bishops. But as I play the game out, it seems that eventually his bishops will be free eventually with no viable option to trade down with my knights.
The final postion seems balanced, but doesnt it feel as though I have some advantage.... somewhere. His pawn structure, to a novice, looks ruined. Kingside they are bound, and queenside, where his pawns have majority, is facing every remaining piece I have. And the only advantage is the extra pawn on that side.
I'd be tempted to try something like ...Qe2 with a queen swap likely. Then I'd try get the g6 knight to c4 and use the rook and other knight to try get a passed pawn on the queenside.
As this was a livechess game, is it plausable that your opponent had to leave? There doesn't seem to be any other explanation.
I played this game earlier today, it isnt very exciting. Both my opponent and myself made plenty of mistakes, and at the moment my opponent resigned, it seemed I had the stronger position. I didnt know what blacks response to my queen move would be. But more importantly I had no solid idea of what to do myself.
Any insight into what moves should be made by either side would be helpful. The position seemed terribly familliar, but I didnt know what to do. I assume plenty of novice players have seen this position before as well, so perhaps it would do us all a little good to go over it.
It should be mentioned that my plan worked as I intended, create a knights vs. bishop game where his bishops are locked up. A side bonus was the weaknesses in his pawn structures. But the formation at the end left no squares for my knights to move well either.
I feel my opponent should have kept playing, and i wanted too, but how?
