Can't connect with other players

OK, I'm a brand new (Platinum) member so forgive my ignorance...

When I challenge someone to an online game (friend or otherwise, member or not, online or not) and hit 'play' all it does is show a pixelated world map and searches forever cycling through thumbnails of people. Also, during the search the challenge appears as 'Rapid vs (named opponent)' instead of 'Westsailer32 vs (named opponent)

I've tried every way available I can find to issue a challenge; via email, user name, challenge on friends profile.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong. The question is what...

Are you using the website or one of the apps?

What happens when you just click "play" and pick a time control?

How about trying to play versus a computer?

The website from my laptop. If I just hit play a ‘random’ opponent appears immediately (just finished a game to test). This is true from my Ipad app also. I’m just unable to challenge anyone specific

No problem playing vs computer whatsoever either laptop or Ipad

So a buddy wanted to know how to play online via chess.com. I related my issues trying to start a game with a specific person so we decided to try and sort it out sitting next to each other, him with his laptop, me with my iPad (not the app, using safari browser). I figure this is the 'worse case' situation (non-friend, non-member) so if I can figure this out I should be good as gold with anyone

We both open chess.com and I click on 'Live chess' and choose to play a friend. I enter his user name and voila! We're playing a game. Just like that.

I have no idea what I did or was different than before. I approached it as before, how I thought it should work and it did. ???
