An 8 point rating gain/loss is typical when playing against opponents of similar skill level; you can gain more points when playing against higher rated opponents. Rating changes are designed to be gradual as people don't instantly become extremely good at the game; it's a slow process.

Does anyone else only gain like 8 elo per win and lose 8 when they lose? It's really hard to get out of 600 when I have to win 13 games in a row to go up 100.
