How is this time possible?

Sort:

This is live chess because I was playing a live timed game when my opponent reached 0 seconds and 0 milliseconds, but they SOMEHOW MOVED AND GOT 0.1 SECONDS ON THEIR CLOCK AND I LOST ON TIME!!! How is this possible? It was a 1|1 game.

The client clocks are not official. The server keeps the official clocks and updates the clients.

If that was your last game your opponent had 0:00.2 second prior to their last move and likely had a premove since only 0.1 second was used in that last move

huh ok but what about the one second increment?

This is the game I looked at and it did not have increment.

Fun fact for vw88108: "millisecond" is 1/1000 of a second.

So 0.1 second is not 1 millisecond, but 100.

oh, I didn't know that

If it was a 1|1 game that means you get a 1 second increment each move.

yes, but how do you get 0:00.1 time on a 1|1 game WITH the increment?

I've noticed this too when watching a friend of mine, for example in this game: https://www.chess.com/game/live/107992858461 which does have 2 seconds increment, so the time should never be below 2 seconds. I had never seen something like this happen before yesterday but since then I've observed it in multiple games.

He actually experimented with it in this game in the end because the position was dead lost anyway and to him it felt like whenever the clock ran down to 0, he always got a 2 second "bonus" to still make a move.

I also just managed to replicate it in the last moves of my game with a 2-second increment: https://www.chess.com/game/live/108151788551

I waited a bit more when the clock was down to 0 at the last few moves and it still allowed my moves and then showed me with a time of less than 2 seconds which should not be possible. I think something is broken with increment games.

Yes, it looks like maybe the increment is being added before the clock expiration is checked.

I'm asking about it.
